    Contextual Research

The New Wave of sharing - YouTube:

In the early 2000s, typically, music videos were shown on TV channels like MTV until 2005. This is the year when YouTube launched its platform and this is when the way music videos were shown and shared had changed forever. Due to the fact that MTV, by mid-2000s, largely abandoned showing music videos to air reality tv shows, Youtube became the home for artists and directors to explore new concepts and reach out to a worldwide audience. New and innovative ideas made low budget music videos go viral and detached from the censorship of broadcast television - videos no longer had to be family friendly and were able to explore more powerful and explicit topics. Ideas that weren’t possible to be broadcasted before started appearing in music videos and this was amazing for the industry and, thanks to YouTube, it's what it is today. If you put all these factors together alongside prices of digital cameras decreasing and the quality of the images produced increasing, this resulted in filmmakers being able to produce images similar to high budget blockbuster movies. This also had a exponential positive effect on music videos. The sheer mass of new videos released each day made it even more important to create innovative and never seen before narratives alongside commercial ways to reach the audience.

Using social media to your strengths:

Since 2005, social media has been an essential way for artists to promote their music and engage with their fan-base. It was, and still is, a way for their fans to interact, find out more about them and find more music from the artist that isn't as big as their major hits. Having a social media presence is key for an artist as it makes more people gravitate towards them because we as an audience know more about their background and what they're like as a person, and we may find a liking to their character/personality.
